Image Details

Descripción: Picture taken on the 28th January 2007, on hard siliceous shalty rocks close to Santa Fe del Montseny, Barcelona, 700 m. altitude in a very sunny place.

This lichen has holartic distribution and it is very common at the Mediterranean and sub-mediterranean area. However, it enters the dry alpine valleys. In Catalonia it is found from the Maresma to cap de Creus not very far from the sea.

Crustose lichen, saxicolous, thallus formed by tiny scales, areolate, with a cracked appearance, from ochre to orange colour. Apothecia numerous, rounded, up to 0,4 mms in diameter: disc flat with bright red colour, margin orange, lecanorine apothecia, margins disappearing with age.

Thallus K+ red to purple.

Very good

I'm fascinated by the rich contrast between the different species present on this picture.

Very interesting explanation.
