| Descripción: | Picture taken on the 1st July 2007 at Fornells, Girona, Catalonia, at the limit of the sea, in sheltered places, 0 m. altitude. Both lichens are common in the Mediterranean area. Verrucaria amphibia is substituted in the Atlantic Ocean coast by its vicariant species Verrucaria maura. Arthopyrenia halodytes or Pyrenocollema halodytes (the correct accepted name) is found on marine gasteropodes, on Patella, and Balanus in an endolithic way, appearing small holes on its surface. Very good picture in Historia Natural dels Països Catalans, Fongs i Líquens, pag.455. It is good reminding marine biologists the updated nomenclature. Verrucaria amphibia instead Verrucaria symbalana and Arthopyrenia halodytes instead Arthopyrenia littoralis. The sea-shore in cliffs, docks and rocks is a very difficult habitat and we only find in Catalonia this two lichen species. I thought V. amphibia only appeared in the Mediterranean, but Dr.Sergio Pérez mentions it in the Check-list of Cantabria´s lichens. Crustose lichen, covering large zones of sea-side, with black perithecia more evidents in certain areas than in others. Do not confuse this lichen with tar spots or certain Cyanophicea. This community appears in Medes Isles and Pinya Rosa Gardens (Blanes), but it is very common all around the sea-shore. Armand Tomás Vidal PH and HTLM Editor |
